[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]If you have decided this year is the year for living out your REVOLUTION to live a healthier life, but fear the moment you attempt to share your excitement and goals with the rest of the family, you will be rejected faster that you can say, “goal setting” fear not! Today, I’m sharing with you some full proof strategies for getting (and keeping) your whole family on board. And bonu: it won’t hurt them a bit.
- Don’t make it about weight. Regardless of whether or not your goals are weight loss driven, that may not be the case for the rest of your family. Yet, even though, your kids and your hubby may not be concerned about a few extra pounds, we all should be concerned about living healthier. When sharing your excitement about living healthier with your extended family, help them to get excited by sharing that healthier eating habits can help your teen son perform better in his sport of choice, your spouse sleep better, and experience less stress, and your teen daughter improve her skin. Make it personal to get everyone excited.
- Give your family autonomy. Everyone wants to make better choices, and live healthier, it’s just that no one likes to be told that they have to. Give your kids, and your spouse the autonomy to make better decisions that will help improve their lives. Ask them questions that will help them set their own goals. “In what areas do you want to improve?” “What foods can we bring into the house, or get rid of that will help you meet your goals?” Allowing your family to be a part of the decision making process will go a long way to keeping them engaged.
- Don’t make it too hard (or too easy.) In order to keep our interest, our goals need to keep us challenged, but not overwhelmed. Getting rid of every chip, and sugary snack in the house FOREVER may not be the best solution. Try fasting certain items on certain days of the week. “No sugar Sundays.” “No Fried Fridays.” Themes also make it fun for the family too. Setting up challenges if you have a competitive bunch, like “Who can get 5 servings of veggies in each day?” All can be fun, and facilitate an environment of healthy eating and fellowship in the family.
- Put God at the center. The only way this and every other journey in life really works, is if God is at the center. Keep God as your focus, reminding yourself, and your family that at the heart of everything we doing (even living, and eating healthier) is a deep desire to draw closer to God and His will. Do this, and experience the rich blessings of His Word, just like in Deuteronomy 28:2, “And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the Lord your God.” Obedience, even in a healthy lifestyle WILL bring blessings to you and yours.
