The Shell Family Journey
To tell the entire story I have to tell you a little about each one of us.I have always battled with self-esteem and being easily intimidated. In my early twenties, I battled with anorexia and bulimia, and that went on for years. Eventually, it was bad enough that my doctor told me if I lost one more pound, I would be admitted to the hospital. I saw what that was doing to my parents, so I started eating again, but in a very short time, depression set in due to the weight gain. After three pregnancies my weight yo-yoed. I had lost and gained and my efforts had been inconsistent. It’s not easy being in front of the entire congregation knowing you’re bigger than you’d like to be. I’ve learned not to let fear hold me back from giving God glory. The weight loss, in my opinion, is the easier part. It’s the maintenance that’s hard, and difficult and takes time and understanding. Knowing what I had dealt with growing up, I never wanted my children to feel that way. Even though I noticed my daughter Brooklynn was gaining weight, I didn’t want to say anything to make her feel self-conscious or insecure. Brooklynn has frequent asthma attacks so the idea of working out has always scared her. She became serious about getting healthy after we got that dreaded call.
When my son Hayden was 8 yrs. Old, he was diagnosed with ADD. We noticed Hayden was also putting on weight, but we thought he had enough to deal with and he would lose that “baby fat.” After years past, he was not only not losing the “baby fat,” but putting more and more weight on year after year. He tried dieting with no success. We decided to get some blood work done to see if it was his thyroid. This is when that dreaded call came. The doctor called and said that Hayden was Insulin Resistant and had to start taking Metformin. This is what finally made our ENTIRE family do something to combat weight issues! TOGETHER, AS A FAMILY! We knew that Dale and Pam Robbins had a work-out facility and decided we would do this together, for our family. We started working out in February 2018. We were noticing some differences, but still not eating right. THEN….one month later, Julie House had a small group on weight loss and that immediately changed our lives! I cried so hard during our first class that I could hardly talk. I just knew this was God’s plan for my family. I went home and asked Hayden if he would go with me, and pleasantly surprised he said, YES! We started tracking everything we ate on an app called My Fitness Pal and made competitions on who could drink more water each day. We planned meals and prepared them together. We worked out as a family until Dale and Pam closed their facility. We have since joined Planet Fitness. To keep Hayden motivated, he also enjoys playing basketball at SOAS every weekend. My husband, Robby even jumped on board and lost 18 pounds. It hasn’t always been easy with family vacations; Thanksgiving and Christmas we all cheated, however, we got right back on track. Hayden was actually the first one to get right back on board. This journey shows that by making healthy changes and giving it all to GOD, EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE! Praise the Lord for over 100 pounds lost for my family!
